School Board Perspective
By Janet Glover, ISD 15 School Board Vice Chairwoman

Getting to know you!

I have been part of the Independent School District 15 School Board now for seven plus months. Some days it feels much longer and some days I feel as if I just started yesterday. I have learned many things but still have a long way to go. Either way I feel as though I am part of something awesome! Many friends have been made and I have gotten to know people over the phone, in person, and through email. The information I receive from all these sources helps me to learn more about the district as well as how people feel the district is doing. Some information is good and some is bad, but if I didn’t receive the information, I wouldn’t know.

In my first six months on the school board, I have one graduation under my belt (congratulations to the class of 2012!), quite a few Communication Committee meetings, a carnival, a few Cedar Creek Community School PTO meetings, some Financial Planning Action Committee meetings, trainings, and a round of teacher interviews.

As a member of the school board, I am really looking forward to the upcoming year and can’t wait to see how the Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM) program works. The STEM program is a different approach to learning. Students will learn through experimentation, discussion, discovery, design, problem solving and collaboration. I am also looking forward to hearing about the benefits of the all day every day kindergarten experience.

Attending the Cedar Creek Community School Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) meetings has given me the opportunity to learn about one of the many wonderful schools in our district and to get to know some of the parents involved with the PTO. I encourage parents to join their PTO to be a part of their child’s school, get to know what really goes on and why or how things are done.

Being part of the Communication Committee has provided me the opportunity to view and discuss all of the emails sent to the school board. I enjoy working with the other committee members to find solutions to problems presented, find answers to questions asked, and learn how community members, staff, and teachers feel about the district. The Communication Committee has asked for a link to be put on the school district website (Departments, Human Resources Communications, Be Informed - FAQs and Myths) where questions and concerns are posted along with the answers. We felt that if one person has the question or concern, so do others. This is another resource for residents and staff to find information. I hope you take the time to view the information posted. If you have questions or concerns that have not been addressed, please feel free to submit a post or send an email to the school board.

Summer is almost over and school will be back in session again soon. Hopefully everyone enjoyed their summer and is excited about a new school year beginning. Take the opportunity to make new friends and get reacquainted with the friends you missed seeing over the summer. Look forward to new classes and new teachers. I am looking forward to a new school year and I hope you are too!
